Nixon’s 1st Birthday | Bananas in Pyjamas

“Are you thinking what I’m thinking B1?”
“I think I am B2 – this cake is just too cute!”

It’s crazy to think that I have known Nixon’s mum, Paris, since we went to pre-school together way back when, and now I’m making birthday cakes for her babies! When Paris asked if I could make Nixon’s cake for his Bananas in Pyjamas first birthday party, the idea for the cake practically came running down the stairs.

I had downloaded a tutorial for a double-barrelled Minion cake from the amazing Lesley Wright from the Royal Bakery and with a few modifications thought it would be perfect for making a 3D banana cake. That is, with a little help from the boy to carve away some of the cake to create the banana shaped head.

After covering the cake with sunshine yellow fondant I created panels of white and blue stripes to create those famous pyjamas. One of my favourite features was the collar personalised with ‘N1’ detail. The banana stalk for the top of his head was created with modelling chocolate and I hand-painted the board to look like the wall paper of the stairs the teddies and bananas run down in the opening credits – complete with ‘Nixon is One’ tiles.

The cake was a delicious vanilla cake, studded with raspberries and filled with white chocolate ganache.

As a rule I absolutely hate bananas, but this little guy might just be the exception.

Happy birthday Nixon J
