The cake that got away

In the craziness of December, what with work deadlines, the Boy’s birthday and you know, that little thing we like to call Christmas, I also managed to squeeze in a cake for my boss, Linda. Linda is a gummy bear lover like myself so I thought I would try out a new recipe for a brown sugar sponge cake with fresh cream but with a twist, the top would be decorated with gummy bears – how hard could it be?

Now note to self - and for everyone else playing at home so you can remind me – do not try out a new recipe the night before you need a cake! The sponge was a complete failure, a flop, a biscuit! I turned to my old faithful vanilla butter cake as a fall back and everything was back on track. I woke up in the morning and whipped up some cream and strategically placed tiny gummy bears on the top – it looked so cute and I was pretty happy.

I drove carefully to work and made it inside with the cake when I decided to carefully rearrange the cake in the container and that’s when it all went horribly wrong – I dropped the cake off the plate. The top layer I caught with my skirt (cream and gummy bear covering my lap) and the bottom tier, along with the cake plate, crashed to the ground. I thought about the 5 second rule but the bottom layer had tiny shard of glass not glistening on its edges! So the cute little two layer cake became one, with an additional slather of cream and gunny bears added for good measure. The slightly smaller cake was still delicious and was very much enjoyed with a nice glass of wine.

Oh the joys of cake decorating!
