The Techniques of a Caker - Watercolour Buttercream

I love a good buttercream cake - especially when working on a mid week cake that I still want to look pretty and taste amazing.

This pretty blue watercolour cake was for the lovely Alex (check out her cute cake from last year here). Alex is the girlfriend of The Boy’s brother and is a lover of chocolate, especially Maltesers. I had been wanting to try out the watercolour buttercream for a while now and was so glad that I did.

Cookies and Cream Deliciousness

After a crazy busy month of trips to Melbourne, Wilson’s bunny rabbit cake, 21st cupcakes for The Boy’s sister and a 3 tier Mad Hatter’s Cake, I managed to sneak in a quick cake for Kim’s birthday.

Wilson is Two

My little birthday buddy, Wilson celebrated his 2nd birthday last month and I had the pleasure of making his birthday cake.

Ayla, May The 4th Be With You!

What a difference a year makes! Last year, Ayla celebrated her 3rd birthday with a hand painted Snugglepot and Cuddlepie cake and a fun little foraging party. This year for her 4th birthday her request was a Darth Vader cake, no less!

The Techniques of a Caker - Stencilling

Curiouser and curiouser! Earlier this month I made a prop cake for a Mad Hatter’s high tea at the Dungog Festival. Have I gone mad? I'm afraid so. I’m entirely bonkers. But I'll tell you a secret. All the best people are.

The Techniques of a Caker - Cake Lace

Just a quick little blog post this month as we are in the middle of moving house (insert happy dance mixed with exhaustion here). I had a couple of lace mats laying around to try out, so in between the packing of boxes and trips between both houses, I quickly painted a dummy cake with fluro pink food colouring and the base for my cake lace was complete.

The Techniques of a Caker - Naked Cake (and a Big Cake Bake)

Over the weekend I decided to put my caking to good use and hosted an afternoon tea fundraiser as part of the Red Cross Big Cake Bake. It was a great excuse to see some great friends, eat some delicious food and raise a little money for a worthy cause - oh and try out a new cake technique.

Suspended Waffle Cake

And in the mornin', I'm makin' waffles!

I had been wanting to make another suspended cake for ages after making my Pipe Me Pretty cake in a class with Sharon Wee last year. While working full time, attending crazy early morning bootcamp sessions and planning and packing for an overseas holiday seemed like the perfect time not only this cake, but also a pretty cake for one of my Cacti. Well until I actually realised I didn't have time in between the aforementioned activities to make two cakes the the waffle cake became multi purpose - and the lovely birthday girl didn't mind at all.

Twice as Nice

Having two older twin brothers, you could say I have a soft spot for twins - not that I even like to entertain the idea of having twins myself - so when I was asked to make the first birthday cakes for two little girls, how could I resist!

The Techniques of a Caker - Watercolour Painting and Wafer Paper Flowers

Earlier this month after delivering a pair of 1st birthday cakes for two little girls and then headed off down the freeway to the Sydney Cake, Bake and Sweets Show to spend all my money catch up with lovely fellow cakers and learn some new skills. I learnt paneling techniques and figurine modeling with the fantastic Jacki of Blissfully Sweet and then made this beautiful watercolor cake with a stunning bouquet of water paper peonies and anemones under the guidance of Helena from Sweet Tiers
